Just as important to Nova Scotia as the mythical cheap steady rates was the source of mythical green electrons to enable the province to get off burning coal.
It's hilarious tragic that Maritime Link (Emera) was able to ship black electricity from NALCOR's Bay d’Espoir complex under the pretense that it was green Muskrat Falls electricity.
What a wonderful business model.
Imagine Nova Scotia could upgrade their transmission grid. Promote as green Muskrat Falls energy but export black coal-fired electricity to the non-the-wiser New Brunswick or Maine ratepayers. Upon delivery it triggers repayment grid upgrade over 35-yrs @ 9% annual return.
Bay d'Espoir is hydro. As green as hydro gets and since it was built so long ago, the enviro impacts that afflict most hydro have already been mitigated.
Seen from here in Quebec, I can't help but think that many of NL's politicians and civil servants are ninnyhammers.
At this rate, NL risks getting noted for a prime export: not fish; but its residents. More than now, I mean.
P.S. I'm a 61-year-old electrical engineer, and what Ed writes here in ... baaaaad for NL. :-S

Hmmm . . . looks like I have my geography incorrect . . . my understanding is that an oil power plant operated by Nalcor could feed the Maritime Link.
No. Bay d,Espour and other Hydro.
