Thank you! Simon and I noticed the new variety of anti semitism arising in the left about 15 years ago. The Jews are included among putative elites - with whites, the well educated, the successful. Apparently the chief sin in this post modern word is being good at stuff.
If you haven't read it, I'd highly recommend David Baddiel's book. It is funny and vicious about this very clear form of antisemitism.
And since our local, colonial elites particularly of the progressive variety are tuned to pick up what is trendy in the metropol, it was inevitable they'd latch onto this sort of thing along with other forms of racism that are these days all the rage among those in the know.
That's the other funny thing - laughable not odd - about trendy racists: the first thing they'll tell you is that you clearly haven't read all the right things to understand why what they think is right. There's nothing new in this: local elites (the academic ones in particular) are especially condescending when confronted with someone who thinks they are wrong about something. An extra bit of humour comes when you point out that their response is, essentially, manspalining. It's not merely ignorant/rude but also condescending. That one will be especially galling to them, much like telling them they are being racist, colonialist, or whatever other thing they are currently (supposedly) opposed to. turning their own shibboleths back on them puts theitr peculiar form of beliefs into a deeply rooted internal conflict.
Anti Semitism is alive and well on most university campuses across North America. Even here in St Johns. We would like to think racism only occurs in the Deep South. Its alive and well right here in our community. Both on Campus, and out in the wider community. If it looks like a duck, sounds like a duck, and acts like a duck, its a duck. Regardless of what these groups may claim. You know Racism and Anti Semitism when you see it. No matter what lipstick MUN and the protestors may put on it.
Agreed. Also, DEI is being used at times as a thin veil to cover what policy really means. For example, Asian kids are being disadvantaged by Affirmative Action policies of some universities (see case Harvard lost last year at the Supreme Court). MUN is all in on the DEI policies now.
As for "here", in the two places the word appears in that column, I meant Newfoundland and Labrador.
As for your observation about Semite, yes, it does refer to a much wider group of people. But this is as Golda Meir reminded people a very long time ago, namely that Jews born in the space between the river Jordan and the Sea *before* 1948 are Palestinians as well since that territory was called Palestine at the time.
None of what is going on in the Middle East reduces so neatly that it fits in the small minds of the sloganeers.

And racism, generally, is widespread here as well. It's often well concealed.

And let’s not forget the irony involved inasmuch as Semite refers to Jews, Arabs and a host of other ancient peoples, including Phoenicians
Context: you said is can’t happen ‘here’. Is that Canada, Newfoundland, or in town?

Where do you mean by ‘here’?
Without context, I cannot tell you what I meant there by here.
