Very troubling scenario but as long as the “big lie” keeps being told, the more it’s being believed!!
Our Financial situation,
Healthcare, Justice, Education, etc., are all in a worse state than ever.
But, as long as the Government keeps insisting that all is well, those profiting from the current system, will promote the lie and celebrate our “success”!🫤
Great piece! No NL politician, or wanna be politician, wants to deal with the real issue that has plagued the Province for decades now, which is simple governance. The administration of the public service, including health care, is simply out of touch and out of control. The centralization of power in the premier's office has reduced cabinet ministers to parrots of the party line instead of actual political masters of departments who could hold people to account. The DM's and ADM's no longer have repercussions for negligence or incompetence, so the system just falls into disrepair, which we suffer greatly from. Who the heck wants to be premier so he/she can tackle fixing the bureaucracy versus doing anything else otherwise? Just drive from CBS to downtown St. John's tomorrow during morning rush hour or try to get a prescription on a weekend to see the absolute mess that we have now. Developing world services provided by European levels of taxation. Mind-boggling! If the PC's simply commit to providing good governance while supporting private enterprise by getting the bureaucracy out of the way, then they should win in a landslide. They would certainly get my vote. If I smell a whiff of a Team Wakeham strategy, I may have to leave this place...
Ok Yes. I actually don't know any of that history.
I know several active politicians who have an annual We Hate Danny Dinner. What a Townie Arsehole. You just have a sudden urge to punch him in the face. Sorry if you a townie.
The debatable point is that Crosbie was not alone. There have been many politicians from NL with national and international stature over the time from the late 1800s until the early part of this century. Not all of them were active in federal politics like Crosbie after Confederation.
My observation would be to wonder why we have none since then. I don't mean the dog in the manger, pain in the arse way Danny Williams was but substantive, influential politicians whether federal or provincial.
I am struck by the generally meagre nature of the more recent crop. Insubstantial. Unserious. And utterly lacking in any influence as a result of the fact they bring very little to the table in the way of intellectual depth, ability, perspective, judgment etc.
it's not like we don't produce those people. It's that those people don't get into politics, at all, by choice. They don't even get involved in the back rooms, really.
What happened to Fred? Tossed aside like an old shoe? Wasn't he one of Andrew's favourites?
Fred shat the bed on the Hickman land deal. Plus Hogan is a bit tonier because he’s a lawyer. Impresses the punters.
Sobering but spot on overview.

They backed the wrong horse. Manning would be gaining a pt of supporters from all over.

We had the best politician ever in my area. John Crosbie Avalon West. Its not even a debatable point. Actual National contender.
