Conservatives eligible to vote in the upcoming nomination fight in Bonavista - Burin - Trinity - or whatever the new district will be called - learned by email from Darin Luther King that he is dropping out of the race only days after his buddy’s greenlit him.
The reason: he wants to spend more time with his family.
It has been an exciting few weeks but after careful discussion with my family, we have decided that, at this point in our life and after serving the public for more than 35 years, the time and commitment required to serve this riding and its constituents for the near to long-term is beyond what we are able to give.
That’s a classic fake reason as regular readers well know. Ryan Cleary made the “spending time with my family” excuse a joke as he bailed on one gig to spend more time with his family and then announced he wanted to be a federal politician.
Maybe there’s something wrong, like an illness in the family, and if that’s the case, then he should say so and let everyone wish him and his loved ones all the best.
Maybe the case against him built up to the point where the crowd in Ottawa politely declined his offer and this lets him save face.
Maybe the other guy outhustled King and he knew he couldn’t win.
That line about making no further comment is another telling feature.
Either way, the guy who has been campaigning for a federal jobs with Trades NL money for years has now suddenly decided he wants out.
Whatever was fixed is now f&cked… err unfixed.
Here’s the full text of the email. Notice Darin couldn’t even spell the party leader’s name correctly:
Dear Friends:
I regret to inform you that I have decided to withdraw my candidacy for the Conservative nomination in the riding of Terra Nova - The Peninsulas.
It has been an exciting few weeks but after careful discussion with my family, we have decided that, at this point in our life and after serving the public for more than 35 years, the time and commitment required to serve this riding and its constituents for the near to long-term is beyond what we are able to give.
I realize that friends, volunteers, supporters, and party members will be disappointed and I am truly sorry, but I ask that you understand, respect, and accept this decision.
I am eternally grateful to my family for their unwavering support of me through my career, to my many friends who continue to stand with and support me, and to the many volunteers who have registered to vote and worked on my campaign. Thank you!
I wish Mr. Pierre Pollievre and the Conservative Party the best of luck and much success in the next election!
I will not be commenting any further on this statement, and ask that you respect our family's privacy.
Thank you.
Darin
