Before Reform and Preston Manning got into Parliament, Newfoundland's government (it wasn't "Newfoundland Labrador" back then, I believe) scuppered 1987's Meech Lake Accord, when Clyde Wells "deratified" it in an effort to obtain ... an equal number of federal Senators for each province.

I don't remember if he wanted Canada's Senate to also be elected, but he definitely cowed his Cabinet, whose members went along despite misgivings.

Result: failure of the Accord, the MSM's focusing on Manitoba MP Elijah Harper's holding up ratification proceedings there and ignoring Newfoundland's unconscionable deratification, and Newfoundland becoming exposed to getting cut off from Canada if Quebec were to hightail itself out (which almost happened in 1995).

Much of the shambling over the past 30 years at the federal level concerning provincial autonomy and national unity would have been avoided if it weren't for that.
